Blueroomess – Moving Forward

They’re one of the bands that best embody the essential elements of American roots music. Though they haven’t released many albums, Blueroomess’s live performances are intense and emotionally charged. The release of their new album, the captivating Moving Forward, is the perfect excuse to get in touch with the people behind the project: Donna Lee and John Married, who originally started as a duo.

As John explains:
«I came from playing acoustic guitar alongside a harmonica player, forming part of various blues bands and a small project before Blueroomess, where I played rhythm guitar in an instrumental group. Eventually, I felt the need to create something more personal, and right at that time, Donna came into my life – and I into hers. From the beginning, we shared a vision, without forcing a specific style, simply enjoying creating and performing songs together.»

And Donna, where does she come from?
“From jazz, funk, and other projects too. I remember one we played in called Atiza. John and I instantly connected, and soon we had a bunch of songs ready. We started playing live as a duo while looking for more musicians. We were clear that we wanted double bass and drums. John always dreamed of having a pedal steel player in the band. Sergio joined in 2015 and fit in immediately — he’s more than just our drummer; he’s a percussionist with a great sense of groove and dynamics. In 2016, Mr. Aaron Feder joined, first playing lap steel, then pedal steel, and later dobro, banjo, and mandolin. We clicked right away, and he became part of the project. The last to join was Ignacio, in 2017. We already had a studio date booked with Mike Mariconda and Marc Tena… but no bassist yet! Ignacio dove in, learned everything, and became a core part of the band.”

And so, almost without realizing it, Moving Forward arrives — a collection of original songs, plus one cover, reviewed in this very magazine.
John comments: “The songwriting process usually starts with Donna and me, but in this case Aaron surprised us with ‘Bright Feeling’, a track that we hadn’t expected but ended up loving and recording. While the songs are born between Donna and me, they take shape as a band. Sergio, Ignacio, and Aaron all contribute their vision, and in the end, everything passes through the band’s filter. We’re quite democratic in that sense, and that gives strength to the final result. Even though we’ve been through a few albums, we never stop composing or trying out new material live.”

And the cover? Donna says they like to take songs they love, reinterpret them, give them a twist, add something of their own — and surprise people. Those who’ve seen them live know it works. Their version of “Bad Moon Rising” by John Fogerty became part of their repertoire, and they liked it so much they decided to record it in the studio.

The band has recently released a small run of CDs (available at blueroomess.com), and they hope to release the vinyl version this summer.

Reseña de "Moving Forward" en la Revista ruta 66 (Febrero 2025) :

Moving Forward
Self-released

Discreet and moving at their own pace
through that vast territory known as
Americana, Blueroomess are well aware
that their world and the commercial
mainstream run in parallel—never quite
intersecting. That may be true, but listening
to their songs is always a refined pleasure,
best enjoyed while swaying gently to their
melodies, where the many shades of
American rock come together.
With a confident and nuanced instrumental
approach, their sonic landscapes perfectly
accompany Donna Lee’s expressive voice—
one that quickens the pulse when needed,

yet flows smoothly through captivating mid-
tempos.

Outstanding guitar work by John Married,
who also co-produces the album alongside
Aaron Feder, the tireless pedal-steel player
and driving force behind many projects.
The album includes nine original tracks and
a closing cover of Bad Moon Rising by the
great John Fogerty.
Take a trip with them to rural America—it’s
well worth the ride.

What a luxury to have a band like this just around the corner. As they say on their website, Blueroomess is a band from Barcelona that puts a unique spin on various roots styles, blending them into their own compelling musical mix. And the best part? They’re incredible live!

The group is fronted by singer Donna Lee, joined by guitarist John Married, bassist Ignacio Sabadell, drummer Sergio López, and Aaron Feder (a long-time collaborator of the much-missed Mary Mahaffey), who handles pedal steel and guitar duties. Their discography includes a self-titled EP, In Nowhereland (2018), and their most recent release Moving Forward (2024).

Recommended? Absolutely.

At the scheduled time, in the lovely setting of Espai L’Aurora in Rubí, they kicked off the show just as they do on their new album, with «Make it worth it,» followed by «As long as we have fun» and «Rebel soul,» both from their 2014 EP. Among the standouts were the addictive «Never love a cowboy,» the driving «Laurelaine,» and the beautiful «Bright feeling,» which, on the album, features Slim Jim in a vocal duet.

They also played a bunch of wonderfully reimagined covers, making them their own — songs like «Cajun Moon» by J.J. Cale, the haunting «Wicked Game» by Chris Isaak, and «Bad Moon Rising» by Creedence Clearwater Revival. But maybe the most jaw-dropping performance was their stripped-down version of «Such a night» by Dr. John, or perhaps the stunning «Piece of my heart»… done in full-on reggae style! Janis herself would’ve given a standing ovation.

The night went on for over an hour and a half, a show full of surprises, with musicians who sound fantastic and a singer in top vocal form. Plus, I always love seeing them at gigs — they blend with the crowd, chat with everyone… they clearly love what they do, and that’s why it shines through.

So now you know: if you’re into rock’n’roll, country, or folk, Blueroomess is your band. Like I said at the beginning, you don’t have to go to Missouri or Tennessee to find them — they’re right here.

By the way, they didn’t say it, but I’m pretty sure Blueroomess are also fans of The Band. So let me take a moment to remember the legendary Garth Hudson, who recently passed away and has now joined Richard, Rick, Levon, and Robbie, reminiscing about those glory days of one of the finest musical groups ever. We’re losing our heroes, one by one.
